Types of Abstract Art


The two major types of abstract art :

Action Painting
Action painting strives to show paint texture and the movement of the artists. Jackson Pollock is an example of an Action Painter. He dripped and poured his paint to create his work.

Color Field Painting
A Color Field Painter is a painter who is concerned with just color and shape. Mark Rothko is one of the best examples of this kind of painter and shows this by his rectangles and the variety of color that he uses in his paintings.

How would you classify Jackson Pollock's work? Well renowned as an abstract artist, he was a leader in the term and application.

Pollock was an action painter, in fact art critics made them term because of the way Pollock painted. Because of the viscosity of his paints he could draw lines and shapes and they would form in the air before landing on the canvas. If you follow the paint splatter and lines it is easy to tell how much physical movement went into his paintings. Hence the term "action" painting.
